The book presents the history and architecture of the cathedral of Šiauliai, a monument of the Lithuanian Renaissance, as well as the activities and works of the builder of the brick church, the priest Petras Tarvainis. The numerous illustrations give the reader a detailed insight into the surviving iconographic material of the cathedral of Šiauliai: maps, plans, documents, drawings, postcards, photographs.
The publication “The Cathedral of Šiauliai” is divided into two parts: scientific research and publications of documentary and iconographic sources. The first part presents the history of the church, its architectural development and a new reference source that has been unavailable to the Lithuanian reader so far — the “Cheerful Greeting” by the priest P. Tarvainis. Prof. Vytautas Levandauskas, the author of the study “The Renaissance Monument of Šiauliai” (Šiaulių renesanso paminklas), who has devoted several decades to researching the architectural history of Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Šiauliai, provides a detailed introduction to the architecture of the cathedral, its changes, and the most important historical events. He reviews the publications and the most important sources on the Cathedral of Šiauliai and presents new information that was banned from publication during the Soviet era.
The book is dedicated to historians, researchers of sacred cultural values and everyone who is interested in the history of church architecture.
